If you’ve ever been caught in a riptide, pulled down into the water, then you know me. Or, more accurately, what I’m like when I’m angry.
Delia was beautiful, smart, and kind. He wasn’t. He said he loved her, but he didn’t know what love was. He was manipulative and cruel -- more than a thief. A beast.
All she wanted was a rose…
These are the words on my sister’s grave. Her sadness, her obsession, forever a reminder I didn’t--couldn’t save her.
I’m not vindictive or cruel. I’m simply as the river--my memory is winding and my reach is long. I watched him steal her beauty, her essence. Watched him become a beast. He thought he'd get away with it, thought he'd go free.
I lay a rose upon my sister's grave.
Light a candle for the beast.
My breath comes in coarse spurts as I climb over the bank of the Anacostia. I lay on the silty soil and Errol lands on me. Warmth radiates from where his talons clutch at my back, and I can feel the transformation, the return of human teeth and eyes. Gone are the scales that arched from my spine. Tension seeps from my shoulders.
I pull on my clothes, noting the faint bruises on my pale skin even the goddess couldn’t heal quickly. I know these are the killing wounds. The ones I almost died from.
I can sense Andrew through the curse that binds us, feel him. My boots squeak as I climb over rocks, and up the bank to the underside of a bridge. The bonfire still glows from the opposite side of the shore, the sun long gone, leaving only night as dark as the bowels of hell. I walk past the bridge and onto roads lined with streetlights. The musty scent of drugs wafting from those on the stoops of low-rent apartments, from the cars, and those lingering in darkened corners at the edge of alleyways, poised like spiders laying a trap.
If they hear me, if they see me, no one says a word, the weight of the knife heavy in my hand.
Scurry, little spiders, scurry on your way. For I am just a predator, searching for my prey.
I smile. Soon, I’ll be free.
