“Shhhhh,” he whispered, tracing his fingers along the inside of my thigh.

“We’ll leave as soon as it’s dark. It will be good to fight for a cause other than my own hatred. Until then, my only goal is to take care of you and worship every inch of your gorgeous body.” He nuzzled under the hem of my shirt and pressed a kiss to my stomach.

Grabbing the edge of my ripped up shirt, I yanked it over my head and sent it sailing across the room into an empty corner. Then with a quick snap, I unlatched my black lace bra. It fell to the floor with my pants, and I kicked the pile into the same corner where my shirt had landed.

He rose to his feet, cupped my chin with his right hand, then brushed away a stiff strand of my dirty hair, and kissed me ever so gently on the lips.

It was a sweet kiss. The kind you used to see at the end of chick flicks in the early 20th century. The kind where the hero has just promised to love and cherish the heroine forever and her foot pops up as he kisses her in that picture perfect way that only those old romantic movies could pull off.

It's that simple.

What do you think?

She stuffed the oilcloth-wrapped leftovers from their noon meal into her valise along with a change of clothing. On impulse, she fished among her dresses until she found a framed photograph of her parents and a beaded bag that contained her old baby brush and spoon, swaddled in her mother's hand crocheted dresser scarf. To lose those, should the wagon end up in the river, would be more than she could bear. Bad enough to leave behind her books and the gaily colored plates her mother had brought from Greece. But the bag would only hold so much. For a moment she stroked the satiny glazed surface of a plate and gnawed her lip as she eyed Bartholomew's battered leather satchel.

What happens when a sheltered cat-shifter and a dark fey come together?

Three-hundred years is a long time, but left to its own devices, what began as the vendetta of one man can grow to encompass even more formidable hatred.

Daitre Salons is a beautiful but naïve heiress whose true heritage has been kept secret even from her. Now, her abilities are emerging and her father’s enemies want her dead, but what bothers her most is that her new husband “in name only” insists on treating her like a child.

Joban Beaucoup, professional guard to the Salons family, and dark fey (alternate spelling from Vodouin origin), has chosen to leave the quaint yet suffocating French town of his orphan-childhood and venture to the Americas, but he needs one thing he cannot concoct, despite his magical abilities – a wife.

When Joban agrees to marry Daitre and take her to the Americas with him, he carries her three-thousand miles away, then whisks her three-hundred years into the future to assure her safety, but while Daitre struggles to adjust to this strange new world, manage her newfound powers, and make peace with her feelings for Joban, Joban learns that even here, their enemies have followed them, now more deadly than ever.

Dai’s Dark Valentine was an interesting which told the story of Daitre Salons and Jabon Beaucoup. The story started out in France in the year 1729. Here we see the Salons family (Daitre and her dad) coming under attack from a man named Rosseau. He had a vendetta against the Salons. This vendetta stemmed from his belief that Daitre’s father was responsible for the death of his sister. Daitre’s father in a bid to protect her from the wrath of Rosseau forced her to marry Jabon who at the time was her bodyguard.  Jabon being a time bending Fey was able to whisk her away 300 years into the future in New Orleans. What followed is a story that was filled with suspense, romance and action.

I found the characters fascinating, yet completely believable. It was easy to relate to Daitre and Joban as they had real life issues dealing with.  I thought that the banter between them was entertaining.  It was clear that they were attracted to each other, however the way these two traded insults would make you question if their attraction was for real.

Joban’s ability would allow for him to adapt to any time period, however, this would not have applied to Daitre. Initially I was concerned about her ability to adapt in the modern world, however, as the story progressed my fears were alleviated.  She could definitely hold her own.  I liked that she was accepting of her shifting abilities in light of the fact that prior to all this she had no idea what she was.

Joban was your typical alpha male.  Many may think he is a jerk for how he treated Daitre at times, but the truth of the matter was that he would do just about anything to keep her safe.  He is one tough cookie, but when it comes to Daitre he is a softie at heart.

The pacing was well balanced and the story was well written. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this story.  It kept my attention from start to finish.  The story depicts that no matter how far you may go, you cannot outrun your problems.  The best way to deal with it is to stand up and face it head on.

I could not decide which one to post so I posted two teasers.

Monsieur Beaucoup glared at her. “Dream on, miss puss. Nobody said anything about you submitting to anything but a marriage in name only. I am not that desperate.”

(Kindle Locations 153-154).

She sat up straight, feigning courage she did not feel. “Papa, when you told me what you wanted, you never said anything about him. I know I am older than most unmarried women, but I thought I would have a choice of suitors. You know, like other French ladies, not that you would sell me to the highest bidder without my say or approval, and you certainly should not have told him our family secret.”

 (Kindle Locations 161-163).

Former Army Captain Dr. Isadora Campbell helped her mother hide a terrible crime. If they work together, maybe no one else will die.

With pressure mounting to reopen the old case, Frazer will use any means possible to catch the killer. Thrust together during the investigation, he and Izzy find themselves reluctantly attracted to one another, and begin an affair. Meanwhile, the killer is much closer than they think.  Excerpt

Izzy grabbed sheets, towels and comforters, battling with the towering pile as she headed toward the door. The sound of Kit’s sobs drove nails of grief through her heart but she kept moving. Izzy was used to stressful situations and coped with disaster by keeping busy. Maybe that’s why she’d gravitated toward emergency medicine. Maximum chaos, minimum time to think.
She grabbed the keys off the rack next to the door. “If the Feds can help catch Helena’s killer this has to be a good thing. Tell them everything you know.”
“But I don’t know anything,” Kit wailed.
With one exception Izzy was a big believer in following the rules, which had made her a damn good Army officer. She opened the door and there stood the federal agent, Frazer.
He was one of those individuals who was so ridiculously handsome you could barely look at him. Worse, he knew it.
“Kit,” she shouted. “The FBI is here, baby.”
Barney came to meet the newcomer. Izzy expected the man to be too self-important to greet the dog but he went down on his haunches and gave Barney a good scratch on the neck. After a few moments of mutual adoration the guy stood. The blue of his tie matched the ocean in his eyes. “What’s his name?”
“Barney—or barmy, depending on the day.” She held his gaze, and he took it for the challenge it was. “You can talk to Kit alone, but if she decides she doesn’t want to speak to you anymore she doesn’t have to.” She called over her shoulder. “Did you hear that, Kit? I’ll be at the cottage. If you get uncomfortable with Agent—” She turned back to the guy. “Sorry, what was your name again?”
“ASAC Frazer.” His eyes glinted, obviously not used to women forgetting details. Or maybe knowing she’d lied about the fact to give herself a little power when she felt so powerless.
“If you don’t want to talk to ASAC Frazer, come over to the cottage and get me, okay?”
Kit mumbled something that could have been anything from “bitch” to “sure.” It certainly wasn’t “thank you” or “I love you.”
Her sister’s lack of appreciation and general sense of entitlement was staggering and Izzy swallowed the hurt and the resentment. Their mother had spoiled the younger girl, and Kit’s lack of consideration for others drove Izzy crazy. Another reason she’d spent so much time away from home.
The sharp-eyed Fed didn’t miss her momentary loss of composure. She buried her reaction, something she’d always been good at, but the military had honed the skill into a mask no one could penetrate. It made for a hell of a game of poker. “Upset her and you’ll find out where I conceal my weapon.”
His eyes creased at the corners, but he didn’t fool her for a moment. “Left shoulder holster, so you’re right-handed. Looks like a Glock-17, but tricky to say for sure without getting a better look.” The guy’s gaze slid over her chest with glacial indifference, but suddenly she knew that was an act too. A wall. His own defense mechanism.
His eyes landed on her mouth, on the mole that sat just above the left side of her upper lip. She resisted the urge to touch her face self-consciously. Warmth filled her, and she knew she was blushing. As a physician and a former soldier, blushing was not in her repertoire. She moved past him, heart beating frantically as she went out the door.

Emotions were high, that was all. She was not attracted to this guy. She’d rather date Hank, and he’d given up asking her months ago. Her dog stayed behind, and she left them to it. She wanted ASAC Frazer to find the killer and leave them alone. She had enough problems in her life without adding a tall good-looking federal agent into the mix.

After a terrifying encounter with the unexplained, it takes ten years and the news of her grandmother’s passing for Emma Grace Hawthorne to return to her childhood home. She seeks peace in saying a proper goodbye, but what she finds is an old love, a sordid family history, and a wrong only she can right.

Living in the shadow of Hawthorne Manor, Noah Garrett has never forgotten about Emma Grace. In a house full of secrets, his search for missing documents reveals a truth that can cost him everything. What he finds gave Emma the freedom to walk away from the mansion, her heart free and clear, but at what price to Noah?

This has been on my TBR for some time now. I have finally gotten around to reading it and I am happy that I did.   For a story that’s short, it sure packs a lot of punch. To say I was shocked by the outcome would be an understatement.  It was sheer brilliance on the part of the author.

The first few paragraphs were sufficient to peak my interest. It definitely kept me turning the pages. I was keen to figure out what were the secrets of Hawthorne. The characters are equally intriguing. The manner in which they were portrayed made me eager to find out more about them. For a story that’s so short, the characters were well developed.

I had my suspicions about Emma Grace’s return to Hawthorne after a ten year absence. However, as I kept reading my suspicions were allayed by the many twists and turns the author placed in the story.  As such when the truth was revealed my jaw literally dropped.

Hawthorne is a hauntingly and beautifully written story. The love between Emma Grace and Noah was sweet. Theirs is a love that transcends time.

I found this story to be a sweet, romantic and enjoyable read and I highly recommend it.

Cassie was glad Luke had decided to drive back because her hands were
shaking with a mixture of excitement and nerves. They tried to make
light conversation, but the sexual tension between them was too much to
sustain a topic.

They walked into her kitchen together; the mounting anticipation was
palpable. Cassie didn’t realize she was hanging onto the doorknob until
Luke gave her a curious look.

“We don’t have to do this if you’re not ready, Cassie,” he said gently.

She’d felt brave in the restaurant and excited on the drive, but now,
back at her place, she was nervous. “I am. At least I think I am. It’s
just been a long time.”

He caressed the side of her neck lightly with one hand, and she sucked in an audible breath. “How long?”

His touch sparked flames of desire through her. She closed her eyes and
savored the feeling before answering in a whisper, “Four, maybe five
years.”

She opened one eye and peered up at him to assess his reaction. His expression was difficult to discern. “You don’t remember?”

Cassie turned her head away. “I was lonely, and he didn’t matter. I
didn’t even know his last name. I’m not proud of who I was back then. I
wasn’t in a good place.”

Tenderly, Luke turned Cassie’s face back toward his. “Don’t hide from me, Cassie. You can tell me anything.”

Cassie blinked back tears. Unless I tell you I may be pregnant. I can guarantee that would be a mood breaker. “Why am I so nervous? It’s not like I’m a virgin.”

He unbuttoned his coat, lifted her hand, and placed it on his chest
above his heart. “You’re not my first either, Cassie, but can you feel
that? My heart is beating like I just finished a sprint. Do you know
why? Because unlike every other time, this feels different—like I’ve
been waiting my whole life for this moment.”

Cassie’s hand shook against his chest. His heart, like hers, was indeed beating a wild dance. “We barely know each other.”

He placed his other hand over hers on the doorknob. “We can fix that.”
He gave her that lopsided, boyish grin of his that melted her heart.
Again. “But you’ll have to let go of the door, Cupcake.”

She laughed nervously and did. He took her hand in his and brought it up
to his mouth, kissing the inside of her wrist while never breaking eye
contact with her. “Let’s go upstairs to your room. We don’t have to
rush. I want to make love to you slowly, learn every inch of you, and
watch you come again and again for me.”

He swung her up in his arms and carried her out of the kitchen, up the
stairs, and into her bedroom as if she were precious to him. Cassie
buried her face in his neck and clung to him. His consideration for her
almost brought her to tears. She was used to people who took from her.
Even if he left before she woke in the morning, she wouldn’t regret
choosing to be with him. He wasn’t like the fumbling boyfriends she’d
had in high school, or the selfish short-term lovers she’d experienced
as an adult. He was a man who knew how to please a woman and intended to
enjoy doing that.
